IN CONVERSATION WITH Kirsty Raper
The power of reels
We caught up with Instagram specialist, co-founder of @reels.rockstars and the genius behind @rebuildagram to chat all-things social media, content creation and more! Kirsty has helped a number of our clients and continues to give invaluable advice over on her page - make sure to give it a follow!
Can you tell us about the services you offer?
I'm an Instagram specialist who helps brands and founders use Instagram more creatively (and efficiently!) to grow their businesses.
With over 10 years of experience in PR and communications, I set up Rebuildagram when the pandemic hit, to help businesses in the lifestyle space pivot to using Instagram as a powerful marketing tool. Since then, I've worked with hundreds of clients, spoken at events at Olympia and The Business Design Centre, and was proud to be named TechPixies “Social Media Provider of the Year.”
In 2021, I co-founded Reels Rockstars with Andie McDowell to help businesses master Reels — Instagram’s short-form video format. Together, we've trained over 2,000 accounts through online courses and group workshops, and worked with brands such as Great Dixter and Hauser & Wirth, as well as journalists and influencers including Sophie Robinson, Michelle Ogundehin, Lorraine Candy, and Trish Halpin. We were shortlisted for Small Business Service of the Year in 2024.
What inspired you to launch both Rebuildagram and Reels Rockstars?
I LOVE instagram! Social media gets a bad press but it is the most incredible way for growing businesses to connect with their customers. And once you’ve mastered how to use the platform efficiently then the time you invest in it can yield incredible results. We’ve worked with clients that have grown fledgling accounts with just 2k followers to create audiences of over 250k followers - leading to huge increases in sales, new clients and even book deals.
What are your top 5 tips for growing a social media following?
- Understand your audience - there’s little point mastering all the intricacies of filming and editing great reels if you aren’t clear who you’re trying to reach and what problem you’re solving.
- Set a routine for how often and what time of day you can post on Instagram and stick to it. Like superglue! The algorithm can change on a whim but the one thing we know it really rewards is consistently showing upl
- Lean into video content (reels) - it is (by far) not only the quickest way to grow your audience but it tells a story better than any other type of content.
- Show up on your account! Your superpower is your brand story and if you hide and resist telling your story and why you started your business then you are missing a massive opportunity.
- Remember that follower numbers are much less important than they used to be. The Instagram algorithm has migrated to be much more like the TikTok “for you” algorithm - much more focused on the content itself so even if you have a small account it doesn’t matter. Instagram can still open up huge new audiences for you.
Advice on how best to connect with your existing audience?
Get on your stories - one a day is working brilliantly right now for HUGE reach. There isn’t a better way to reach your existing customers.
Your most asked question by ecom brands?
Do I have to post every day of the week? NO!
One instagram hack every business owner should know about?
You can change the covers on your reels if you go back and click the 3 dots - great for the perfectionists among us!
Your favourite tips and tricks for creating reels?
Set a time limit and if a reel is taking you longer than 30 minutes stop. That’s not a good use of your time. The more you make the quicker you’ll get.
Three marketing/instagram/video editing tools you can’t live without?
My phone - I edit 90% of my reels using Instagram. I use InShot for more advanced editing, it’s a very good value editing app. But i’m excited for Instagram’s new editing app “EDITS” out at the end of this month. I also love Canva for creating reels covers (sorry, I know Canva makes proper designers sob in horror!)
Three new instagram features that brands should know about?
EDITS - coming out shortly - brand new editing app that looks great, more here
3 minute reels - coming soon to a phone near you - they started on TikTok and have done super well
Remove silences feature on reels - check it out here
How best can brands keep up with social media trends?

We’ll be announcing some new Reels Rockstars and Rebuildagram online courses in the next few weeks so make sure you sign up to the mailing list here and here to be the first to know. We announce everything to our subscribers first and the sessions often sell out before we even get to announce them on Instagram!
